Should you ship by sea or by air from Dubai?
Choose sea freight when the cargo is heavy or bulky and can wait for a sailing. Choose air freight when it is urgent, light or high in value. Many businesses use both, sea for stock and air for urgent orders. If you are unsure, send us the details and we will quote both.
When to choose sea freight
Sea freight suits cargo that is planned ahead and takes up space.
- The cargo is heavy or bulky
- You are restocking and can plan around a sailing
- The load fills a container, or a good share of one
- You are moving machinery or oversized goods that need a flat rack or an open top container
- The freight cost matters more to you than the arrival date
When to choose air freight
Air freight suits cargo that somebody is waiting for.
- An order is urgent, or a production line is waiting for a part
- The goods are light and high in value
- The shipment is small, a few cartons or a pallet
- The goods are sensitive to temperature and need chilled handling
- You are sending samples ahead of a larger sea shipment
How is air freight charged compared with sea freight?
Air freight is charged on chargeable weight. The airline compares the actual weight with the volume weight and charges on the higher one. Sea freight is charged per container for a full load, or per cubic metre for a shared load. Light but bulky cargo is charged on its size when it flies.
The International Air Transport Association gives the general rule for volume weight. Divide the volume of the shipment in cubic centimetres by 6,000 to get the volume weight in kg.
Can you split one order between sea and air?
Yes. Many importers fly the part of an order they need now and send the rest by sea. Both shipments can run under one Gxpress file, so your documents are checked once and the same Dubai team clears each arrival. Tell us which items are urgent when you ask for the quote.
Where Gxpress fits
Gxpress books both. Sea cargo moves through Jebel Ali in full and shared containers, and air cargo moves through DXB and DWC.
Our Dubai team clears and delivers either one. Freight and clearance sit on one invoice.
