Should you ship FCL or LCL?
Choose FCL, a full container load, when your cargo fills most of a 20 or 40 foot container or has to travel sealed on its own. Choose LCL, a less than container load, when it fills only part of one. If your load sits in between, send us the details and we will quote both.
When to choose FCL
A full container is yours alone. Nothing else is loaded with your goods.
- Your cargo fills most of a 20 or 40 foot container
- You want the container sealed at origin and opened only at destination
- The goods are fragile or high in value and should not be handled with other cargo
- The goods need a temperature controlled container
- You have a date to meet and want the sailing that fits it
When to choose LCL
A shared container lets you ship without filling a box.
- Your cargo fills only part of a container
- You are testing a product or ordering a small quantity
- You would rather ship little and often than hold stock
- You buy from several suppliers in one country and want their loads consolidated
- You want to pay only for the space you use
Is LCL cheaper than FCL?
For a small load it usually is, because you pay only for the space you use and not for a whole container. As the load grows, the two get closer. The point where a full container pays moves with the rates on the day, so we quote both options when it is close.
What happens to LCL cargo at each end?
LCL cargo is handled more often than FCL cargo. At origin it is packed into the container with other shipments at a consolidation warehouse. At destination the container is unpacked and each shipment is separated before clearance and delivery. In Dubai, forwarders that bring in consolidated cargo move it from the terminal to their warehouse under a customs declaration.
Packing matters more for LCL because of that extra handling. Use strong cartons, put them on pallets where you can, and mark every package.
Where Gxpress fits
Gxpress books both. We run weekly LCL consolidations from India, China and Europe into Jebel Ali, and full containers on the sailing that fits your date.
Our offices in India and China check the papers at origin. Our Dubai team clears and delivers the cargo.
