Should you use a courier or a freight forwarder?
Use a courier for a few light parcels or documents that must arrive fast. Use a freight forwarder for pallets, containers and regular business shipments.
The table compares the two.
When is a courier the right choice?
A courier is simple. You book online, a driver collects and the parcel is delivered to the door. For samples, spare parts and documents, that is hard to beat.
If you send a handful of small boxes now and then, stay with a courier.
When is a freight forwarder the right choice?
A forwarder makes sense once the load is too heavy or too bulky for a parcel network. Stock on pallets, machinery and full containers all fall here.
It also fits when the goods need customs work, such as a permit, a certificate of origin or free zone papers.
- The shipment is on pallets or fills a container
- The goods need a permit or a certificate of origin
- You ship the same lane every month
- You want sea freight, which a parcel network does not offer
When should a business switch from courier to freight?
The usual sign is the bill. Couriers charge each parcel on its weight and size, so the cost climbs quickly as orders grow.
When your parcels to one country start to fill a pallet, ask a forwarder to quote the same load as air freight or as a shared container. Compare the two in writing.
Who handles customs with each one?
A courier clears small parcels as part of its service. For a commercial shipment, the importer still needs a customs code and the right papers.
A forwarder files the full declaration itself or through a licensed broker. Ask which, and ask who your contact is if customs holds the cargo.
